Divine Election and Free Choice PDF Print E-mail
We believe that a person has a choice when it comes to accepting or rejecting Christ. We do not believe that any sinner is destined for hell and blame God for sending them there; every sinner in hell is there by his own choice. There is no such thing as irresistible grace. James 1: 12-18 makes it quite clear that each person is responsible when they are tempted and sin.

We also believe that predestination is a Scriptural doctrine (Rom 8: 29, 30; Eph 1: 5, 11). While these two doctrines may seem to be incompatible they are both true. Predestination shows us the picture from God's point of view. His will happens whether we like it or not; he is always in complete control of the universe and it is comforting for each Christian to know that God is in control. This also means that there is no such thing as the directive and permissive will of God; there is just God's will. On the other hand, looking at the situation from the human's point of view, each person is completely responsible for every choice they make and can never blame God for making them suffer the consequences of their choices. God has given us the gift of choice so that we can more richly enjoy his goodness and more completely appreciate his greatness (Heb 11: 6).

We were created in God's own image (Gen 1: 26, 27): God is a Spirit (John 4: 24) but we are flesh and blood so we are not created in his image in that way. God is infinite but we are finite so we are not created in his image in that way. God is eternal but our bodies are confined to time so we are not created in his image in that way. God has the capacity to have relationships and God has the ability to choose and we are created in his image in that we can have relationships with God and other people as well as being able to make choices.
